Sea dogs

Continuing the Age of Sail theme here with some of Crusader miniatures Sea dogs. Again they are made by Northstar.

I really liked adding stubble to the first model's head, and the beard on the second seaman really made him come to life. I looked up period clothing to try to get the colours right. The soldiery type is wearing a British uniform. I continued the scenic base idea with two of this set, although you can only really see it on the third one.

Scurvy Dogs

These miniatures are by Artizan designs, made by Nick Eyre's Northstar figures.

The scenic base on the last figure was an experiment that I am quite pleased with. So often the edge of the base forms a frame, I like the scenery spilling over here.

More Thunderers

Work in progress
I enjoyed painting this model in particular, even consulting a colour wheel to choose his outfit.

Thunderers

Along with the painted longbeards and unpainted Bugman's Brewers I found a collection of thunderers, some of which were luridly half-painted I had a lot of fun finishing them off.

Half painted state

Some work in progress pictures.

Reboot

I rummaged around in my parents' loft a couple of years ago and found my old miniatures. Only the longbeards were painted. The Bugman's Brewers were still in the box, and some thunderers were half painted and looking pretty horrible. More on those later. Here are Bugman's Brewers. There are ten in total, these are the ones worth showing.

Ranger

I had read a lot about miniature painting before painting these, and watched youtube tutorials. I think what I was able to apply from this studying was the use of subtlety through diluted paint, and greater attention to shadow and highlight placing. My favourite is the ranger. I took the idea for his verdigris belt decoration from one of my longbeards. That one has a more jade look, but I liked the green detail. Grey rocks in the grass add a new element.

Early work

I must have painted these at the age of about 14 in around 1996. They aren't the first miniatures I painted, but are the oldest still in my possession. They feature quite a lot of liberally applied inks. I never liked doing the same thing twice, or I never remembered how, so they all have different skin tones.

Welcome

Welcome to Paint and Lead, a blog showing  my painted miniatures.  I rediscovered miniature painting in 2016 after finding my old, half painted, collection in my parents' attic. I have branched out from Warhammer Dwarves to paint anything that catches my eye. Please enjoy.

Grenadier goblin

My latest project. A Grenadier goblin from 1985, I think. Not sure how I'll proceed, but I've given him a custom oval base. I'...
